Explore The Flat Tops Wilderness

The United States Congress designated the Flat Tops Wilderness in 1975 and it now has a total of 235,214 acres, making it the second largest wilderness area in Colorado. The closest trailheads to Meeker are located at Trappers Lake, the Marvine Campground and the South Fork Campground. You will find amazing fishing, hiking, and backpacking, and typically solitude after leaving the campgrounds. Downloading the Hiking Project app is a great resource to look at trails.

Mountain Biking in Meeker

Mountain bikers will be amazed by the quality of trails in Meeker. The trailhead is at Phillip and Dorcas Jensen Memorial Park. From there, you will find a variety of trails. The go-to ride is riding up China Wall to East Ridge, down Hidden Valley, and then down the remainder of China Wall back to town. For a longer 14 mile ride, you can link Hidden Valley, Lion Canyon and China Wall. The Meeker Flow Trail offers a truly impressive jump line with lots of wood features. Stay for Hunting Season in Meeker

Meeker provides some of the best elk and mule deer hunting in Colorado. Hunting opportunities in the area include elk, mule deer, moose, pronghorn antelope, bear, and mountain lion. A number of highly-qualified local outfitters in the Meeker area provide professionally guided elk and mule deer hunting during the hunting season. Fly Fishing in Meeker

Meeker is one of the most coveted fishing areas in state. Mountain Whitefish are more common here than most other places, in addition to the abundance of Rainbow, Cutthroat, Brook and Brown Trout. The rare Tiger Trout can also be found. The White River runs through town and is the largest river in the area. A plethora of mountain lakes and smaller streams surround the town, especially as you venture into the Flat Tops. The CPW State Fishing Map is a great resource for researching fishing locations. Off-Roading in Meeker

Meeker is home to the Wagon Wheel OHV Trail System that has over 250 miles of trails and 16 interconnecting loops throughout the White River National Forest. OHV riders can experience an incredible mix of rugged mountain trails, abundant wildlife, and many natural and cultural historic sites in Meeker. The trail system offers magnificent vistas and a variety of trail difficulties ensuring all skill levels will enjoy their ride. Rio Blanco County and the town of Meeker are “OHV friendly” which allows for OHV travel on city streets and designated county roads.

Winter Activities in Meeker

The Meeker area has access to excellent snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. You can rent a snowmobile at Gianinetti’s Powersports.

If motorsports are less your thing, we recommend hiking or skiing to the Marvine Creek Yurt, which is equipped with snacks, a wood stove, and a propane stove for free use. To get to the Yurt, head to the Marvine Campground until the snow plowing ends and start hiking. The hike is usually 2.5 miles.
